Where Do I Get My K’gari Vehicle Permit?
There are three ways to grab your K’gari Fraser Island permit:
Online Booking
The easiest way to get your permit is through the Queensland National Parks Booking Service website. This method is quick and convenient, allowing you to secure your permit well in advance of your trip.
Over-the-Counter Booking
If you prefer a more personal touch, you can purchase your K’gari Fraser Island permit at booking offices on the mainland. These offices are located near popular departure points, making it convenient to grab your permit before you head to the island.
Phone Booking
If you come across any issues with the online system or need help, you can book your permit by calling 13 QGOV (13 74 68). Do note that mobile phone charges may apply.
Pro Tip: Don’t wait until the last minute! Permits can get booked up, especially during peak season.
Important Vehicle Permit Tips and Information
Here are some important points to remember about your Fraser Island permit:
Display Your Permit:
Once you have your permit, keep it safe and displayed clearly on your vehicle’s windscreen at all times for inspection by authorised officers. It’s your VIP pass to explore!
Read the Rules: K’gari has specific driving regulations to protect the environment and ensure everyone’s safety. Take a moment to familiarise yourself before you hit the road.
No Same-Day Modifications: Need to make changes to your K’gari Fraser Island permit? Any changes must be made more than two days prior to the start date. Unfortunately you can’t change any bookings on the same day they were made so triple check that all details are correct when you make your booking.
Non-Transferable: It’s important to note that vehicle access permits for K’gari Fraser Island are non-transferable—that means that the driver of the registered vehicle must buy the permit in their own name.
Refunds: If you sadly need to cancel due to extenuating circumstances, refund requests can be made more than two days before the start date and within 28 days of the permit end date. You can submit a refund request via your online account.
Ferry Costs: Don’t forget to factor in the cost of the ferry to and from K’gari Fraser Island. Ferry prices range from $140 to $350 per vehicle for a return journey from either River Heads or Inskip Point.
Driving Tips for K’gari Fraser Island
Driving on sand can be challenging if you’re not used to it. Here are some tips to help you navigate K’gari Fraser Island like a pro:
Lower Tyre Pressure
Reduce your tyre pressure to improve traction on sandy surfaces. By lowering the tyre pressure, you increase the surface area of the tire, which stops you sinking into the soft sand! Aim to lower your tire pressure to around 24 psi for the best performance on sand. You might need to take them lower if you get really stuck but it’s important to inflate them again as soon as you can as tyres that are lower than 24 psi can easily come off their rims.
Drive Slowly
To avoid getting stuck, keep your speed low. Driving slowly also means you can react quicker to any changing conditions and navigate tricky spots without losing momentum. It also reduces the risk of damaging your vehicle or the beautiful environment.
Stay on Designated Tracks
Always, always, stick to the designated driving areas to protect the environment and avoid hazards. Driving off-track can damage the delicate ecosystem and lead to fines. Plus, following the marked routes is much safer because you’re driving on paths that have been specifically designed for vehicle traffic and are much more stable.
Watch the Tides
No one wants to be stranded or swept out to sea! Make sure you know your tide times before you head out, and try to plan your beach drives during low tide as this provides a wider, firmer surface to drive on and reduces the risk of becoming stranded.
Camping on K’gari Fraser Island
If you plan to camp on K’gari Fraser Island, you’ll also need a camping permit as well as your vehicle access permit. You can find this permit through the
Queensland National Parks Booking Service website or by calling their office. Pass along all the important details including where you plan to camp, and the number of people in your group. It’s wise to plan ahead, especially during busy periods, to secure your spot.
