14 days | 13,776KG | 178 volunteers | 95kms of beach
Thank you 💚 it was a huge effort by everyone and an amazing display of kindness.
From the 14th to 27th March 2022 we facilitated K’gari Fraser Island’s BIGGEST BEACH CLEAN UP EVER! Off the back of our Waste Warrior experience the weekend prior where we had already collected 1.8tonnes (that is not included in the waste total above) we kick started a huge beach clean up. Why? because the island’s 75 mile beach was trashed by overnight in 1 high tide and a wind change.
Tonnes of rubbish washed up on the beach. It was like 50 garbage trucks had just spewed all over the island usually stunningly beautiful beach. It was overwhelming to us all but we raced back for our bags, hooked up the trailer and headed out with our ute’s. We put the call out for help and prayed that people would come.
And they did! We hosted volunteers, organised transport, coordinated logistics and raised funds to pay for the clean up with our partners Ocean Crusaders who were fundamental in the success of this clean up. Though we were at the centre of the rubbish storm we could not have pulled this off with out the help of Ocean Crusaders, National Parks, Butchulla Rangers, Tour Operators, Accommodation providers and the community volunteering their help and support.
It was a truly amazing effort by all involved and we hope that K’gari now has an army of Waste Warriors ready for action during the next battle in the war on waste on our world heritage K’gari Fraser Island.
