There are so many things to do and see on the 123km-long, sand island called K’gari which happens to translate to ‘paradise.’ There are a few ways to explore the island but almost all of them require a 4WD. We know that planning the perfect holiday can get a tad bit overwhelming at times, especially if it is your first time visiting the destination, or have lots of people to consider and plan for.

Don’t worry, we are here to help you. So if you wish to create unforgettable memories with your family, enjoy a romantic getaway or go on an adventure with your mates, we strongly recommend continuing reading.

Let’s start with the basics

Beyond everything, and like we have already mentioned but cannot stress enough, you will need a 4WD to explore K’gari. Well, unless you want to walk, I guess. The island is basically all sand with a few rocks and only 4WDs can properly navigate the rough terrain.

We know that it may sound challenging but driving a 4WD on K’gari is honestly not that hard. The key is to take your time to learn and follow safety instructions. Luckily, we know everything about exploring K’gari by 4WD and we are passionate about passing the knowledge and helping others to leave their own tracks.

Another essential thing you need to take into account before coming to K’gari are the permits and the tides.

Vehicle permits and camping permits are only necessary if you decide to explore the island with your car and in your own way, as our 4WD Car hiring from Noosa and touring options include permits in the price.

Driving on K’gari is subject to tides, so always remember to check tide times beforehand. The general rule is to not drive on the beach for 2 hours either side of the high tide.

Well, now that you know the basics before coming to K’gari, let’s get to the fun stuff!

Why a guided experience can be great

There are two primary ways of exploring K’gari: booking a touring experience or going by yourself.

K’gari is not only rich in nature and wildlife but also in history and aboriginal culture. If you are the type of adventurer that travels with purpose, you will not want to miss any of the stories and knowledge behind the natural wonders of the island.

With perfect timing, you will discover secret spots and enjoy the most amazing places like Lake McKenzie, Lake Wabby, Indian Head and Champagne Pools. You will be able to focus only on exploring, while your guide takes care of all the rest.

Don’t worry about the crowds either. All our tours are made for small groups, where you will get plenty of time for yourself, as well as privacy and time to just chill on the beach with your favourite beverage. Plus, we know all the best times to hit the best spots!

What are your accommodation options?

First of all, we suggest taking a couple of days off to explore K’gari. There is so much to see and do that a day experience will not be enough to satisfy your thirst for adventure!

A 3 (or more) day trip will allow you to switch off from busy schedules, reconnect with nature, become one with K’gari and live on island time for a glorious while!

So, what are the best options when it comes to spending the night? There are 4 main options: camping, glamping, holiday home and resorts. So what’s your style?

For us, being as close to nature is always the best. Camping or glamping gives us that sense of relaxation that is almost hard to put into words.

Enjoy the evenings around a campfire, wake up to the sound of the ocean and start the day watching a beautiful sunrise …it doesn’t get better than this! There are more than 10 amazing campgrounds on K’gari where you can set up your own camping spot with either hired gear or bring your own. If you are looking for an even more unique way of spending your holidays, especially with kids, glamping behind the dingo fence is for you.

Our Glamping Retreat puts you and the environment first, where comfort and relaxation come together with adventure and pure nature. With spacious areas, cozy glamping rooms and a huge breachfront garden, our retreat suits small and big families, as well as couples looking for a great getaway. In the words of some of our guests … ‘It is an oasis in paradise.’

I am going with my family, what should I know?

Family holidays on K’gari are unbeatable and a great opportunity for your kids to learn essential things about nature and our country.

K’gari is totally safe for young children when you have a little common sense and safety precautions while driving along the island, like respecting the speed limits and using your seat belts.

The long sand beaches of the island are great for family games, walks and watching spectacular sunrises. Eli Creek is a must-visit for kids as well as Champagne Pools, Lake Allom and Lake McKenzie.
